A Lithuanian Parliamentary Delegation Visits Taiwan to Participate in Human Rights Discussions with the NHRC

A Lithuanian parliamentary delegation headed by Matas Maldeikis, Chair of the Taiwan Friendship Group, arrived in Taiwan today (24th) for a meeting with Chen Chu, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). The discussions between the two parties focused on Taiwan's recent human rights advancements and significant human rights challenges. Chairman Maldeikis commended Taiwan for its progress in democracy and human rights and expressed a desire for ongoing cooperation in upholding their mutual values of freedom, democracy, and human rights.

Chairperson Chen pointed out the many parallels between Taiwan and Lithuania, emphasizing that both nations pursue peace and democracy while facing threats from larger neighboring countries. She expressed her appreciation for the Lithuanian delegation's visit to Taiwan following the recent presidential and parliamentary elections, viewing it as a strong endorsement of Taiwan's democratic values. Additionally, she offered special thanks to Chairman Maldeikis, Deputy Speaker Radvilė Morkūnaitė-Mikulėnienė, and the various parliamentarians from different parties who have consistently shown their support for Taiwan.

Chairman Maldeikis noted that both dictatorship and democracy arise from the will of individuals, which ultimately influences political systems. He highlighted that Taiwan's enduring dedication to human rights is a fundamental aspect of its society, which stands in stark contrast to China's authoritarian regime. Furthermore, he underscored that Taiwan's political successes are a testament to the relentless efforts of its citizens.

Tomas Raskevičius, the Chair of the Lithuanian Parliament’s Human Rights Committee, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the shared history and geopolitical challenges faced by Taiwan and Lithuania as small nations under threat from authoritarian neighbors. He praised Taiwan's commitment to advancing human rights and emphasized the importance of sharing Taiwan's narrative on a global scale. He contended that as more nations adopt the principles of human rights and democracy, they will not only bolster their own security but also play a vital role in fostering global peace. Lithuanian MP (Member of Parliament) Arūnas Valinskas remarked that Taiwan's existence serves as a testament to China that freedom and democracy can flourish in Asia.

The two parties further discussed various human rights issues, including Taiwan's advancements in democratic rights, gender equality, immigration policies, the abolition of the death penalty, and the functions of Lithuania’s Parliamentary Ombudsman.

Chairperson Chen expressed her appreciation for Dr. Dainius Pūras, a Lithuanian human rights expert and former UN Special Rapporteur on the right to health, who visited Taiwan in June 2023 to share insights on promoting international human rights conventions. She expressed hope for future collaborations and exchanges with Lithuania in the realm of human rights and participation in international organizations. Chairperson Chen warmly extended an invitation to Lithuanian human rights experts, scholars, and ombudsmen to visit Taiwan for further discussions.

The meeting was attended by NHRC Deputy Chairperson Tsai Chung-yi, as well as commissioners Wang Jung-chang, Wang Yu-ling, Chi Hui-jung, and Pu Chung-cheng. Commissioner Pu presented Chairman Maldeikis with a modified traditional Tsou garment as a gesture of respect and welcome.
