Introduction to the NHRC's Independent Opinion on Taiwan’s 4th Report on the Implementation of CEDAW

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has been actively promoting the enforcement of international human rights conventions in Taiwan since it was founded in August 2020. Amongst the UN's core human rights conventions, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) was the first convention that Taiwan was committed to implementing through a series of actions, including domestication and reporting. The Executive Yuan submitted Taiwan's 4th Report on the Implementation of CEDAW in March 2022, and NHRC released its first Independent Opinion on the Implementation of CEDAW later in June. This Independent Opinion covers several important issues such as Gender-based Violence and Access to Justice; Migrant Domestic Workers; Work-Family Life Balance; Disadvantaged Groups of Women; Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression; and the Impact of COVID-19. It is anticipated that it will draw public attention to women's rights while also raising awareness in support of gender equality.
